Give Your Heart to the Hawks A Tribute to the Mountain Men Winfred Blevins 9780765314352 Books

I first bought this book 40 years ago because I was intrigued by the title. I was so impressed with the Mountain Men in the book that I named my son Colter. After a recent trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone I purchased the Kindle edition to reread. Rarely does a book touch my heart the way this has done. Historically accurate but not a dry read in any way shape or form. The people in this book have character, depth and heart. The stories are entertaining, educational and the end is heart wrenching. This book is easily in my top 5 books!

Give Your Heart to the Hawks A Tribute to the Mountain Men Winfred Blevins 9780765314352 Books Reviews

This collection of astounding stories fills some gaps and weaves an inside historical look on America's early years. Win Blevins' writing adds a heartbeat, pulse, sweat, powder, shot, blood and campfire smoke to these wonderful stories that might seam dry if one was to watch them on The History Channel or in another book! Awesome read. It has an odd title that gives some of my friends a puzzled look when they read the cover, but who cares when the book is this good. You wont regret learning how hard these men lived, their passion for the wilderness, how they preserved the their right to defend, live, and earn everything they had, and about some early history of our country that is not emphasized enough in our schools. Simply entertaining for a historical read. Now, back to reading it!! Buy it.....................NOW!
I bought this book for my husband for his birthday. He loves it and has read it twice already. The book tells true accounts of mountain/frontiers men. My husband said that the stories were very well written and entertaining. He is an outdoors man as well; so I think most outdoors men would enjoy this read and historical look into the past.
Lots of fun. Had no idea just how important the Search for Beaver was to the exploration and subsequent colonization of what would later become the American west--though as a youngster in school, I made a brief acquaintance with trappeurs--and lots of insight, too, into encounters with the indigenous tribes. Author uses the lingo, which is an education in and of itself. Gets a bit repetitive sometimes.
What an eye opening account and education of what went on in the early 1800's with these incredible men. My new found hero is Jedidiah Smith! I confess I was wondering while reading just where the book was headed and like most books, I found it at the end. Civilization, Religion, and Commerce all eventually transformed what was once a clean, pure, pristine and very innocent area of the country, into something completely different than it had been. I found it sad and amusing that once again, Belief Follows Need. The religious die-hards needed to believe that the Indian Tribes (what an education you get on the various Indian Tribes, too) wanted to become Christians and therefore needed to become White, when in fact, all they wanted was to understand the White man's technology and how things were made. I assure you that reading this book will make you aware of a world you never knew existed. It's an investment in time and money that is well worth both.
I read this book for the first time back in the late 1970s, when I was first getting into the history of the fur-trade era in the Rocky Mountains. Found it to be the most inspirational volume I had read. Later, after becoming friends with the author, Win Blevins, I read it again. I have been involved with recreating the era ever since. Now I have several people that are beginning to do the same, and so purchased several copies as gifts to help them understand the legacy of the Mountain Men.
I have read individual accounts of most everything Win puts in this book but I find he pulls a whole lot together in one book in very readable fashion, much like this other works. I highly recommend this book for those seeking a good glimpse into a very interesting period in the American West. It is very sympathetic to the Mountain Man, as you might expect from the title. If you are a typically schooled US citizen of younger age, you can learn things your teachers ignored along the way, while they tasked you with memorizing dates and indoctrinating you with the politics of our time.
Win Blevins writes the story of the mountain men who were the first white men to cross the Mississippi to explore and trap in the West. He writes the story in an interesting way taking his information from a lot of documented resources. The author clearly states in notes where the resources might be questionable for accuracy. It will give the reader a very different view of many of the other books written on the subject.
