The Best Possible Answer A Novel E Katherine Kottaras Books

The best possible answer is about Viviana, who is in high school, and is dealing with a bunch of stuff all at once. It starts off with her waking up in the hospital because she fell asleep on her bike ride home and fell off her bike. Vivi sometimes has episodes and her family thinks its because she's overstressing and overworking herself. Vivi's dream is to go to Stanford, like her dad, so she's been studying so hard for her AP exams and her finals. She also has the best friend in the world, Sammie, and she knows about all of her troubles (especially her episodes) and tries to take her mind off of everything. They start working at the pool in their building and accidentally start to like the same lifeguard, Evan. Unfortunately Evan is really into Vivi and not Sammie and Sammie is really into Evan--so of course Vivi being a good friend tries to get them together...too bad it doesn't work out at all. Also, Vivi finds out her dad has another family, who has 2 kids, as well as another kid from a previous arrangement. Basically this book was a huge rollercoaster with Viviana going through a lot of ups and downs. It was a really interesting book. I really liked Evan and Vivi's relationship as well.

The Best Possible Answer A Novel E Katherine Kottaras Books Reviews

The Best Possible Answer by E. Katherine Kottaras is an emotionally charged coming-of age story of a young woman struggling with the aftermath of one mistake, while also dealing with her father leaving unexpectedly soon after. With the help of her best friend, a new summer job, and the reappearance of a boy she once knew, she learns that it is okay to make mistakes and not be perfect all the time. That she can love herself and those around her just the way they are.

"We’re asymmetrical beings seeking a perfect kind of symmetry that can never be attained. They showed us cracked vases as examples of the beauty of ordinary objects. No design is perfect, they said, but we still can’t help but try."

Viviana Rabinovich-Lowe has everything planned out taking her AP exams, studying for the SAT, going to the Design and Engineering Academy during the summer, and applying to Stanford. However, one unforeseen mistake, throws her plans completely out the window. When the stress of her mistake and the worry of further failure causes her to begin having episodes of anxiety attacks, Vivi's parents decide it would be best for her to rest for the summer. So instead of going to camp, she ends up working at her apartment building's community pool with her best friend Sammie. An opportunity to be around people who don't know anything about her humiliation or her anxiety. She can just be her. However, even a summer job at the pool has it's own dramas.

The Best Possible Answer is very character-driven. Viviana is an emotional character, impulsive, and at times makes things more complicated than they need to be, but she is also relatable and real in her desire to please her parents and need to not be seen as a failure. I enjoyed reading about Viviana's relationships with her friend Sammie, her sister Mila, her mother, her father, and Evan, the boy both Sammie and her are crushing on.

The author conveys how strongly Vivi feels for each person, which made reading the novel easy to fall into. However, in regards to the conflicts within the novel (some unnecessary, especially in regards to Sammie and Evan) there seemed to be a little too many. I would have enjoyed more time spent delving deeper into some of the storylines or characters. For example, Vivi herself and Vivi's mother.

Overall, The Best Possible Answer by E. Katherine Kottaras is a well-written novel, with relatable characters and a clear strong message that is encouraging to readers Doing your best and being happy with who you are, no matter the mistakes, is what is important. Not perfection. As Vivi's mother told her, “You are so very young. Your life has only just begun. Don’t let your mistakes define you.” Excellent advice. I happily recommend this book.

The Best Possible Answer by E. Katherine Kottaras is a young adult standalone contemporary. I think a lot of high school students will be able to relate to some aspect of the story and of Viviana's character. I really enjoyed this story. There were some things I absolutely loved, and there were a few things I thought detracted from the flow of the story. Overall, it was a very good book, and I think a lot of people will really enjoy the story and be able to relate to it.

Let's start with the things I liked. I was able to put myself in Viviana's shoes pretty easily. (for the most part.) I was an overachiever in high school too and I was very concerned with grades and doing everything perfect. Everything seems like such a big deal back then. One bad test score could ruin my GPA and ruin my chances at college or at scholarships, etc. I got what she was going through. And with the pressure of getting into a good school even greater than it has been in the past, I feel like a lot of people will be able to relate to the stress Viviana is under. I also loved that each of chapters started out in the form of a multiple choice question to show something Viviana was going through in her life. It was hilarious and so very accurate for standardized testing answers. Which made it even funnier. I also really liked the overall plot line. There are some of the smaller side plots that I thought took away from the overall flow of the story, but in general I really liked the journey Viviana went on.

And now for the things I didn't love so much. I thought there was a lot going on. Some was very relevant to the story and some of it seemed surprising and out of place. Any one of these issues might have been ok on their own, and would have been a very nice complement to the stresses Viviana was under, but taken all together it seemed like a bit too much. I don't want to say what they are , but if you would like a spoiler you can see what I mean here-->
the thing with Viviana and her friend both crushing on the same guy, the big ole secret with her dad (having multiple secret families) the health issues with her mom, the naked pictures she sent to an ex; etc. See what I mean.
There is a lot going on in the sidelines of this story. I wish we would have picked one or two of those things and worked them into the story, but not all of them. As it was, it all worked well together but it did have my head spinning a bit as the reader.

Bottom line I really liked Viviana, and her friend, and the writing for this story is excellent. I loved how relateable Viviana seemed. I think many readers will love The Best Possible Answer for that very reason. I loved all of the standardized test humor and questions that were woven into the story. I do think there were too many things going on in the subplots. It detracted from my enjoyment of the story, but not by much. Overall, The Best Possible Answer was a great read.
