In the Afterlight A Darkest Minds Novel Alexandra Bracken Books
Fans of Alexandra Bracken's Darkest Minds series are in for a wild ride with In The After Light, as this series comes to an exciting, unpredictable end.Normally I don't have a hard time summing up my feelings over a book, but being that I'm still digesting everything I read, and that ending, I'm struggling to put everything into words. Keeping this spoiler free will be hard, but here goes. Alexandra Bracken has done a fabulous job at creating an intriguing, dangerous world that fans of YA sci-fi/dystopian books will enjoy. From her fascinating world building, to her lively cast of unforgettable characters, Bracken has done a suburb job at the way she developed her story, and characters over the course of the entire series. Just as I think I might have things figured out, Bracken quickly made me realize that, that wasn't the case at all.
Ruby is an interesting character, and someone I've rooted for since the get go. I've really like the way she's grown over the course of the series, and how she story wrapped up. Though it's not without betrayal, heartbreak, and some crazy events. I felt that in this particular story, both she, and her group of friends all have to learn to face their fears, and the consequences of their earlier actions, head on. If these characters weren't already all broken in some manner, I would say what they deal with and have to over come personally would break them. Instead, I felt that they're learning to face the demons from their own pasts, and accepting the consequences of their actions from the previous two books in the series. It makes them stronger, and strengthens each of them in a different way. I liked seeing how each of them grows and matures through everything they go through and deal with in this book.
Bracken's world building is awesome. Her writing is awesome. From the world building to her characters, to the story itself, everything is written in vivid detail. I love it when an author creates a story/series where everything comes together. All the details no matter how little or big are in the story for a reason. It was easy for me to visualize the world, the characters, and get sucked into all that was going on in this series, and this book. In The After Light is one crazy, wild ride. It will either have your heart hammering in your chest from the adrenaline ride, leave your heart breaking with some of the shocking reveals, and then there are the moments that you will cling to the pages to find out what will happen next.
In summary, In The After Light is an awesome, thrilling conclusion to an exciting series. The Darkest Minds sucked readers in, Never Fade had readers wanting more, and In The After Light will leave readers wishing the series wasn't over. If you read The Darkest Minds, and Never Fade, then you definitely need to pick up In The After Light! *There is language in this book (including the f-word) that might not make it suitable for younger YA readers.

In the Afterlight A Darkest Minds Novel Alexandra Bracken Books Reviews
I wanted to love this book. I liked the first enough to buy more, but I wished I hadn't. I'm not into all the teen love and reading about how this person is their everything then feel hurt when they turn away and then.... It continues. There was so much that was hard to swallow and I know one always has to suspend belief...but this was not an enjoyable read. I read it and wanted to see how it ended, and couldn't skip too much because I didn't want to miss things in between, but I'd rather have not started the series in the fist place.
I discovered the series by seeing advertisements for the movie that has recently came out in which I have not watched, and judging by the trailer the movie will have a completely different story and character powers then the book series.
A little honey before the vinegar. When I give a 3-star rating it usually means that I will reread the story at some point that I did enjoy it to a degree but did not quite fall in love with it, or was not fully pulled into the story. The ending of this book did pull me in. Alexandra Bracken was able to create characters that I felt for and emphasized with. She did throughout the series create characters that we're unique and memorable to some points. An awesome aspect I was not expecting was that there is no love triangle throughout the series to create a false tension in the romance plot. It does have the feel of a typical romance in the genre it is not boring nor is it predictable. I do enjoy a novel and would be interested in seeing what this author could do in other genres.
The vinegar. The series as a whole requires the the suspension of disbelief in many portions of the story. Whether it is the constant ability to find gas in the cars that have been abandoned for years, or being able to find abandoned convenience stores with chips and snacks still available, or the ability to find lost friends by simply looking in a state the reader does have to force themselves not to look behind the curtain for the author's hand. The United States is a country of 350 million people even if you kill 98% of the children 14 & below you're not going to find half the country abandoned. It seems that people only show up when the author needs them too.
The most glaring aspect of the series is how the vast majority of adults shown, even those that are supposed to be allies to our young protagonist, are pretty much horrible people who hate the gifted survivors. Part of the background is that the entire country broke down to the point that the president basically becomes a dictator set on hiding kids away in internment camps while experimenting and murdering them. He also drafts majority of adults between the ages of 20 and 40 into serving as the equivalent of Nazi camp officers.
My final thoughts. I do enjoy ya novels across the many genres they show up in. Many of the dystopian series I've read could start out with a what if question. For example for this one it is what if something kills the majority of the population of children while giving the survivors superpowers. That is a great premise for a start of a story and I do feel that the series started with a good premise but the execution was a bit off for my taste. There's too much happenstance in favor of the protagonist.
It's hard to gauge where this book should go in age groups. The amount of suspension of disbelief the author asked of the reader would seem to indicate a younger audience say around 12 to 14 however the language and events that occur are more appropriate for older teenagers and above.
